WHO IS HALDUN DORMEN?
Haldun Dormen, who was born in 1928, celebrated his 94th birthday with dancing this year. His grandfather Ömer Efendi was originally from Manavgat and was born in Cyprus to his Cyprus-based family while his paternal grandmother is Lebanese. His father, Sait Ömer Bey, was born and raised in Cyprus and settled in Mersin after completing his education in England.
Haldun Dormen, who was born on April 5, 1928 in Mersin to the children of Hatice Nimet Rüştü Hanım, the daughter of an Istanbul pasha, and Sait Ömer Bey, an intellectual businessman from Cyprus, moved to Şişli, Istanbul with his family, before he was a year old. Haldun Dormen, who founded Şişli 19 Mayıs Primary School, injured his left foot in an accident at the age of 8. The master name took his first step on the stage when he was a secondary school student at Galatasaray High School.
Dormen, who graduated from Robert College with a high school degree and studied theater at Yale University, made his first stage appearance in America in 1951. After his return to Istanbul in 1954, the detective character he embodied in the play Cinayet Var in Küçük Sahne, directed by Muhsin Ertuğrul, made his first appearance in front of a Turkish audience. After collaborating with Muhsin Ertuğrul for a year and a half, in 1955 he founded the Cep Theater with a 60-seat hall behind Beyoğlu Finger Street and in 1957 the Dormen Theater in Istanbul’s Feriköy district with the comedy Pastor Kaçtı.
The cast of the Cep Theater with names like Nisa Serezli, Erol Günaydın, Metin Serezli, Erol Keskin has not changed in the Dormen Theater either. The community experienced its heyday between 1957 and 1972. He directed the musicals “Lüküs Hayat”, which were played in the city theaters for many years, and “Kral ve I” at the Istanbul Opera.
Haldun Dormen did his military service as a reserve officer in the Supply Division in Halıcıköy, Istanbul.
In 1959, Haldun Dormen married Betül Mardin, a world-renowned name in public relations. From this eight-year marriage, a son named Ömer emerged.
