Soytürk explained that Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece, Selimiye, is the first place that local and foreign visitors visit when they come to the city.

Soytürk explained that visitors even follow the square project and restoration work, Soytürk said, “As it is, local and foreign visitors watch the square with admiration. Edirne will have a very beautiful place when completed in a short time. The project completely uncovered the silhouette of Selimiye and the city. On the other hand, the extensive restoration of Selimiye is underway. Works there are also going on in a good way.” he said.

Increasing visitor numbers

Soytürk stressed that efforts to increase the city’s tourism potential would continue.

Explaining that the last 2 years have been boring in terms of tourism due to the Covid-19 epidemic, Soytürk said 2022 has started well.

Noting that the number of tourists visiting the city is increasing day by day, Soytürk continued:

The first and second phases of the project “Selimiye Mosque and Surrounding Urban Design and Landscaping” carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, General Directorate for Construction Affairs continue.

Lawns have been laid out on Selimiye Square, the design work of which is nearing completion in Edirne. The laying of rolled turf on the 25,000 square meter lawn area of ​​the 72,000 square meter project area is almost complete.

The finishing touches are also being made to the running and green areas of the square.

Works around the Selimiye Mosque, which started in October last year on the orders of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, are expected to be completed in a short time.

Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum announced that the square would open on Eid al-Fitr.
