The solos of 21-year-old Rabia Akbıyıkoğlu, a second-year student at the Faculty of Elementary Mathematics Education at Istanbul’s Medipol University, are drawing widespread attention on social media. Guitarist Akbıyıkoğlu, who drew a lot of attention with his performance with the night band, says his interest in metal music started at a young age.

Born and raised in Burdur, Akbıyıkoğlu said: “My passion for metal started when I was little listening to bands like Linkin Park, Anathema and Apocalyptica with my sister. I started playing guitar by trying to play something on my sister’s classical guitar at home. Due to the support of my high school friends and my intense interest in metal music, I switched to electric guitar during my high school years.”

“I WANT TO BE AN EXAMPLE”

Akbıyıkoğlu, who says he is continuing his work as a single, shares his cover songs and solos on social media, goes to the evening group, which consists of women in headscarves, as a guest artist, and gives concerts. Asked about her goals, Akbıyıkoğlu says her biggest dream is to be a musician who gives concerts all over the world and can produce her own music, and continues: “Musically, I want to see myself as an electric guitarist who puts on a role model for many musicians of the future.”

REACT TO HIS MUSIC

Akbıyıkoğlu said he was satisfied with the attention he’s getting on social media and at concerts, saying: “Since the day I shared my music on social media, I’ve received different reactions. My attitude towards these reactions from the beginning was to keep quiet and focus on my work and keep making music. There are and always will be people who react differently to women who are successful at work, whether with or without a headscarf, and those who want to overshadow their success. I think the best response to such reactions is to work harder and achieve great things.”
